Instagram is the most popular social network for our clients to showcase their businesses. We currently look after 9 Instagram accounts including content creation, engagement and competitor analysis.
We know how important it is to format your content, and if you are reading this article, you probably know how important it is too. Instagram is a visual platform primarily, your image or video will capture the attention of your existing audience or somebody new who hopefully then hits that follow button.
You need your image or video to grab the attention in a split second of scrolling. We all do it, scrolling endlessly down an infinitely long page of Instagram posts, how easy is it to miss some great content!
So let’s get on with the guide…
Instagram Feed – Image & Video
The Instagram feed is where all of your standard posts end up on your profile and they are seen by people in their own feeds and on the explore section.
- Square: 1080 x 1080px
- Landscape: 1080 x 566px
- Portrait: 1080 x 1350px – Our favourite.
The portrait 1080 x 1350px will fill a mobile screen as much as possible within the Instagram app so is easier to grab attention with and you can, of course, fit more juicy content into it. As its portrait, you will want to think about using your camera or phone’s camera allowing enough extra height to the shot which ultimately leads to the sides of the image getting cut off. So don’t photograph anything important too close to the edge.
The image below shows our preferred Instagram image size of 1080 x 1350px and also includes a guide frame which is 1080 x 1080px. If you keep the juiciness of your content within the 1080 x 1080px square you cannot go wrong!
The Instagram Stories are a great way to get new audience members (followers) for your Instagram account. The story reel is right at the top of the app and promotes the content of some of your favourite accounts and accounts you have engaged with regularly.
Aside from us recommending you keep your story live 24-7, we also recommend uploading images in a certain size.
Instagram Stories size: 1080 x 1920px
So you are essentially uploading what would be a landscape view of your phone’s display, in portrait.
It is easy to quickly take a photo or video on your phone and add it to your story if you use your phone in portrait mode.
If you try to upload a video in 1080 x 1080 or 1920 x 1080, you will find too much of the video would need cropping to fit it in.
Instagram TV (IGTV)
For IGTV they originally only supported vertical video (portrait) style video, but Instagram saw the disadvantages to this as the whole idea of the app was for it to be quick and easy to share content, but if you force vertical video, this simply is not quick or easy if you were recording it in traditional formats. Thankfully now, IGTV supports both vertical and horizontal video formats and if you upload horizontal video it will prompt the viewer to rotate their device to view the video in the correct orientation and filling up that beautiful display IN FULL.
- IGTV vertical (portrait) video size: 1080 x 1920px
- IGTV horizontal (landscape) video size: 1920 x 1080px
Also to note there is no time limit for videos uploaded to IGTV.
